Okemos is an unincorporated community that occupies two-thirds of Meridian Township in Ingham County. The city is a census-designated place for statistical purposes. It doesn’t have it’s own municipal government.

Located just five miles east of Lansing, the city has a population of 21,369. The cities size is 16.9 square-miles. Okemos — and much of Michigan — is rich in Native American history.

Originally a farming and trading settlement, Okemos was founded in 1839 under the name Hamilton. It wasn’t until 1859 the village was renamed Okemos in honor of John Okemos, an Ojibwa (Chippewa) Chief.

Okemos is the anglicized version of the Ojibwa name Ogimaans, meaning “Little Chief”. Then, it’s no surprise to learn that Okemos is nicknamed the Chiefs. Okemos high school is one of the best school districts in the entire state of Michigan. To this day, you can find a marker in Meridian Township that shows where Okemos and his people lived.

The city that was originally a farming village is now a Lansing suburb. The city has a lot to do, from some of the best restaurants to family events. The area includes some of the safest neighborhoods. It’s a family oriented city with a lot of married folks and some college kids thrown in. It’s also home to Meridian Mall. It’s motto is “Meridian Mall is the One, with a Million Square Feet of Fun”. The mall features about 125 stores plus food courts. Surrounding the mall are plenty of restaurants. Everything you could need, in terms of shopping and eating, is located in Okemos.

Okemos has a humid continental climate that is influenced by the Great Lakes.

The region often experiences large seasonal temperature differences. The summers are hot, typically reaching 100-degrees in the peak of summer. The monthly daily average temperature in July is 71-degrees. It’s also very humid in the region, although not as bad as some parts of the Midwest. The winters are cold — sometimes severely cold. So cold, school is canceled just because it’s too cold out.

Precipitation is greatest during the summer, but we have significant snowfall which occurs from November to April. We average around 51 inches per season, but has far exceeded that average over the last couple of years. The growing season is short — only about 149 days.
